Covering your cake board
Here at Twins we cover our cake boards 99% of the time. We feel that this gives a more professional finish to cakes. There are two methods for covering a cake board:
Method 1
- Cover your cake separately and allow to dry.
- Brush your cake board with a little water.
- Roll out your chosen sugarpaste. Make sure that you roll your sugarpaste to a size large enough to cover the cake board (at least half an inch bigger than the cake board).
- Fold your sugarpaste back over the rolling pin to lift it off the surface. Lay it centrally over the cake board.
- Smooth the top using a smoother.
- Trim the edges flush to the cake board using a sharp knife.
- Use a ribbon to decorate the edge of the cake board. Make sure your ribbon is the correct length. Use a little touch of edible glue or Pritt Stick on the cake board edge and place your ribbon on.
Pritt Stick can be used to attach the ribbon to the board
Method 2
- Dampen your cake board with a little water.
- Use a little jam and place your cake in the centre of the cake board. Make sure the exterior is buttercreamed or has a layer on jam on before placing sugarpaste on top.
- Roll out a piece of sugarpaste which is large enough to cover the width and height of your cake, as well as the width of your cake board.
- Fold your sugarpaste back over the rolling pin to lift it off the surface. Lay it centrally over the cake and board.
- Smooth over the top and round the sides and onto the board.
This method may take some practice but once the icing is even across the cake and board, cut the icing flush to the board. Decorate with ribbon as desired.
Use a rolling pin to help you place sugarpaste over cake and board.
