How to adapt a recipe
Have you ever found the perfect recipe but not had the right size tin? Or perhaps you’ve decided to take on a three-tier extravaganza for the first time. If this is the case you will need to scale your recipe to suit different sized tins. This can easily be done by following these steps. You will need:
- A measuring jug
- The original tin which your recipe uses (Tin A)
- The tin you want to use (Tin B)
Measuring jug, 8" tin & 10" tin
- Fill Tin A with water. Fill to where you would normally fill with cake mixture.
Measure the volume of Tin A
- Pour the water into a measuring jug and make a note of the amount of water put in Tin A. e.g. an 8” tin may take 1 L.
- Measure the capacity of Tin B using the same method. Pour water into measuring jug. e.g. a 10” tin may take 2 litres.
Measure the volume of Tin B
- Figure out how many times the water of Tin A would go into Tin B. In this example, it would be twice. Therefore the recipe needs to be doubled.
Things to bear in mind:
- Make sure Tin A and Tin B are the same depth.
- When measuring the volume capacity of a loose-bottomed tin, make sure the base is securely fitted or line it with a large, hole-free plastic bag to stop water spilling out.
